Overview
Sunset recently upgraded our platform with significantly improved search capabilities, better user interface, enhanced status tracking, and more reliable communication. As part of this upgrade, we moved from our old domain (sunsetapp.com) to our new domain (hellosunset.com).
Both versions are web applications accessed through your browser, but they represent different generations of our technology. If you created your Sunset account before mid-2025, you may have been using the old version. Our system is designed to automatically direct you to the appropriate version based on when you signed up, but occasionally users encounter confusion about which version they're using or how to transition to the new platform.
β
How to Tell Which Version You're Using
The easiest way to identify which version you're on is to look at the URL in your browser's address bar:
Old version: sunsetapp.com
May look visually different from current screenshots or descriptions
Some newer features may not be available
Email links may direct to sunsetapp.com
New version: hellosunset.com
Updated, modern interface
Full feature set including improved search and status tracking
Email links direct to hellosunset.com
If you're unsure which version you're looking at, the URL is the definitive indicator.
Why There Are Two Versions
When we upgraded our platform, we made substantial improvements to:
The search algorithm and database coverage (finding more accounts)
Verification processes (more reliable identity confirmation)
User interface and experience (clearer status, better navigation)
Communication and notifications (more informative updates)
Document handling (better upload process, clearer requirements)
Status tracking (see exactly where your search stands)
Rather than immediately forcing all existing users to migrate to the new system (which could be disruptive if they were mid-process), we kept the old platform running while automatically directing new users to the improved version.
Automatic Redirects
Our system is designed to route you to the correct version:
If you created your account recently (after mid-2024):
You should automatically access hellosunset.com
All links in emails will go to hellosunset.com
You're using the new, improved platform
If you created your account before the upgrade:
You may automatically access sunsetapp.com
Your existing search and data remain available there
Links in older emails may direct to sunsetapp.com
Common Sources of Confusion
Bookmarked the Old Version
If you bookmarked Sunset before the upgrade, your bookmark points to sunsetapp.com. When you click it, you'll be taken to the old version even if you should be using the new one.
Solution:
Delete your old bookmark
Navigate to hellosunset.com
Bookmark the new URL
Use the new bookmark going forward
Mixing Links from Old and New Emails
If you've been using Sunset for a while, you may have emails from both the old system and the new system. Clicking different email links can take you to different versions, creating confusion about which is "correct."
Solution:
Always use links from your most recent emails
Or simply type hellosunset.com directly into your browser
Ignore older email links
Created Account on Old System, Want New Features
You started your search on the old platform but have heard about improvements in the new version and want to access those features.
Solution:
You can transition to the new platform (see "Moving from Old to New" below)
Your information and any findings will be migrated
Seeing Outdated Interface
The screens you're seeing don't match current help articles, screenshots, or descriptions. Buttons or features mentioned in support materials aren't visible in your account.
Likely cause:
You're accessing the old version (check URL)
Solution:
Navigate to hellosunset.com to access the new version
Start a fresh search on the new platform
Moving from Old to New Platform
If you'd like to transition from the old platform (sunsetapp.com) to the new platform (hellosunset.com), the process is straightforward:
Step 1: Navigate to the new platform
Open your browser and go to hellosunset.com (not sunsetapp.com)
You may be able to log in with your existing credentials, or you may need to create a new account
Step 2: Begin a new search
Click "Begin Search" or the equivalent button on the homepage
You'll be guided through the onboarding process
Step 3: Enter information
Provide the deceased's details (name, date of birth, date of death, etc.)
Upload the death certificate
Confirm your relationship and authority
Complete all required steps
Step 4: Notify us about migration
Email [email protected] with: "I previously had an account on the old platform for [Deceased's Name] and have started a new search on hellosunset.com. Please migrate any existing findings or information."
Include both the old and new email addresses you used if they're different
Step 5: We handle the rest
We'll review your old account
Any discovered accounts, documents, or relevant information will be transferred to your new account
We'll close your old account to prevent confusion
You'll receive confirmation when migration is complete
Important Notes About Migration
You won't lose any information:
Any accounts we discovered in the old system will be transferred
Documents you uploaded will be available (though you may need to re-upload the death certificate for the new verification system)
Your search history and notes will be preserved
You'll benefit from improvements:
Better search algorithm may find additional accounts
Improved verification processes
Clearer status tracking
Better communication and updates
The search will restart:
The new platform runs a fresh, more comprehensive search
This may find accounts the old system missed
You'll go through verification again (with improved reliability)
Timeline resets, but the search is more thorough
What If You're Already Using the New Version?
If you're confident you're on hellosunset.com but things still seem confusing or outdated:
Possible causes:
Browser cache is showing old versions of pages
You're referencing very old help documentation
You're comparing to screenshots from the old platform
Solutions:
Clear your browser cache: Settings β Privacy β Clear Browsing Data
Hard refresh the page: Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac)
Ensure you're looking at current help documentation (check the URL or date)
Log out completely, close browser, and log back in
Avoiding Future Confusion
To ensure you're always accessing the correct, current version of Sunset:
Always use hellosunset.com
Type it directly or use a current bookmark
Don't rely on old email links
Check the URL
Before logging in, glance at the address bar
Confirm it says hellosunset.com, not sunsetapp.com
Update your bookmarks
Delete any bookmarks pointing to sunsetapp.com
Create new bookmark for hellosunset.com
Use recent emails
Links in recent emails point to the current platform
Older emails may have outdated links
When in doubt, ask
Email [email protected]: "Can you confirm which platform version I should be using?"
We'll tell you the correct URL for your account
What If You Accidentally Created a Duplicate Account?
If you unknowingly started a new search on the new platform while still having an active account on the old platform, you may now have two separate accounts.
Don't worry - this doesn't cause problems, but we should consolidate them:
Email [email protected] with:
"I think I have accounts on both the old and new platforms"
Deceased's full name
Any email addresses you may have used for either account
Which platform you prefer to use going forward
We'll:
Identify both accounts
Merge any important information
Close the account you're not using
Confirm which single account to use going forward
This prevents confusion about which account has your current search status and ensures you're not receiving duplicate communications.
Specific Issues Related to Old vs. New Platform
Verification Keeps Failing on New Platform But Worked on Old
The new platform has more rigorous verification processes. Information that was accepted on the old platform may need to be more precise on the new one.
Solution:
Carefully review all entered information
Ensure it matches the death certificate exactly (including middle names, suffixes, etc.)
See the "Verification Issues" article for detailed guidance
The stricter verification improves success rates with financial institutions
Features Missing That You Remember Having
Some old platform features were redesigned or relocated in the new version.
Examples:
Navigation structure changed
Some manual entry fields replaced with automated processes
Status displays reorganized for clarity
Solution:
Explore the new interface to find relocated features
Email support: "I'm looking for [specific feature], where is it on the new platform?"
We'll guide you to the equivalent functionality
Old Account Shows Results But New Account Doesn't Yet
You transitioned to the new platform and your old account showed discovered accounts, but your new account doesn't show them yet.
This is expected:
The new search takes 1-6 weeks to complete
Old findings will be migrated, but the new search may take time
You may discover additional accounts the old system missed
Solution:
Be patient while the new, more comprehensive search runs
Email support to confirm when migration of old findings will complete
We can provide a summary of what was found previously while new search progresses
Timeline for Old Platform Sunset
The old platform (sunsetapp.com) will eventually be retired completely. All users will transition to the new platform (hellosunset.com).
Current status:
Both platforms remain functional
New users automatically start on new platform
Old users can continue on old platform or transition voluntarily
Eventually, all old users will be migrated to new platform
If you're still using the old platform, we encourage transitioning to the new one at your convenience to take advantage of improved features and capabilities.
